Certificate Program Requirements

A total of 21 credits are needed to complete most Lebanon College certificate programs. In certain instances, at the suggestion of the faculty, a student may be required to take additional courses to satisfy proficiency or prerequisite requirements. Students may transfer up to six credits from another approved institution, professional training, life experience, or college level examination. Lebanon College certificate programs are usually the "major core" requirement of a degree program and are completely transferable to our degree programs. An academic advisor will assist students in planning their programs.

These programs consist of education in specific professional fields, without the general coursework required for a college degree. The number of credits required is usually 21. Up to six credits may be transferred into a Lebanon College certificate from an outside approved source. As with the degree programs, an advisor guides the student from beginning through graduation. All credits earned in our certificate programs are transferable to our degree programs. Fields of study include:

Certificate in Graphic Design

Certificate in Graphic Design Provides students with a wide variety of computer technology skills which focus on graphic design and desktop publishing. Students will examine graphic design, layout, copywriting and editing techniques, and will develop a portfolio of their design and production work.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate proficiency in their knowledge and understanding of graphic design and desktop publishing;
  • demonstrate proficiency in using various software design programs;
  • demonstrate understanding of effective copywriting techniques;
  • demonstrate understanding of graphics editing techniques and shortcuts;
  • demonstrate understanding of how to solve various layout and design problems;
  • develop a portfolio of their design and production work;
  • be more aware of graphic design careers available in the marketplace.

Certificate in Criminal Justice

Program Information:

The Certificate in Criminal Justice is designed for students who are seeking employment in the law enforcement field or wish to transfer to a four-year school and complete a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or law enforcement. The Criminal Justice degree plan is broadly interdisciplinary in nature, embracing the study of the humanities, law and the behavioral and social sciences. The curriculum seeks to balance theoretical inquiry with applied knowledge.

On a nationwide basis the job market is excellent for people interested in law enforcement or criminal justice.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the American Criminal Justice system and the working of the various local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies;
  • demonstrate an understanding of the rules, principles, and doctrines of criminal law and apply these to the commencement of criminal proceedings, prosecution and defense of charges, sentencing and appeal;
  • demonstrate an understanding of investigative procedures for the collection of data in case preparation;
  • demonstrate an understanding of structures and functions of American courts, the roles of attorneys, judges, and other personnel, and the development of corrections philosophy, theory, and practice;
  • utilize the knowledge and apply critical analytical skills acquired in the social sciences in preparation for continuance of education.
What Does a Career in Criminal Justice Mean?

Criminal justice careers include professional positions in probation departments, law enforcement agencies, and correctional institutions for juveniles or adults, parole offices or community treatment and service settings.

What do graduates of the program do?

Certificate in Early Childhood Education

A certificate in early childhood education trains professionals for work with children below the typical school age, usually children between 3 and 5. The curriculum in this educational track includes child psychology, parenting, and early learning strategies. Most professionals in this field work in elementary or pre-schools. This program is designed to prepare the student to work in several child care or early elementary school environments. The state requires a child care certification to work in a day care center, nursery school, pre-school or private home day care. Many public schools now require aides, substitute teachers, and Para-professionals to have at least an Associates Degree. Areas covered are the special needs student, social problems, psychology and the developmental stages of pre-school, early elementary and mid-elementary students.

Upon completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the theories of early childhood education that supports the development of young children and to gain skills in the practical application of these theories in the classroom;
  • gain skills in practices that support and encourage young children's growth in physical, language, social, emotional development, and growth in self-esteem and creativity;
  • gain skills and knowledge in positive communication techniques that encourages children and promotes positive guidance;
  • demonstrate understanding of the significant influence parent-teacher partnerships have on the development of children; to develop skills and strategies to support families;
  • identify an awareness and personal definition of respect for human differences; to develop skills that actively strengthen inclusion of the diversity represented in the classroom, family, community, and society;
  • apply theories of child development to plan inclusive, developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Certificate in Medical Coding

The Professional Medical Coding course available through Lebanon College pairs certified instructors who currently work in the Medical Coding field with a local college that has strong ties to the medical community. The curriculum used in this course was developed by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Students will receive classroom instruction, participate in workgroups, and apply newly gained knowledge to real coding scenarios.

After completing the Professional Medical Coding course, students may choose to sit for the nationally recognized Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification.

What do graduates of the program do?

A certificate in medical coding will pave the way into the high demand field of health care. Though computer programs are taking the job that many billing clerks used to do, there is still a need for these professionals. Most billing clerks are responsible for compiling and keeping track of patient invoices and then mailing them out to customers.

What is the job outlook for graduates?

Opportunities for certified coders exist in physician offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, legal offices, educational settings, governmental agencies, military hospitals, consulting firms, billing companies, etc.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this program should have working knowledge of:

  • Medical terminology and patient clinical record content.
  • Anatomy & disease processes.
  • Health care delivery systems, regulations, and political reform.
  • CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-9-CM coding systems, common coding errors, and their impact on claims processing.
  • Legal aspects of health care and confidentiality requirements.
  • Basic understanding of the complete revenue cycle for professional claims.
  • Personal computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet basics, Windows, hardware file maintenance and other topics related to computers in health care.
